  1. Dear Frederick,

My name is Ross and I came across your website by way of it’s mention in the Rough Guide to Tanzania. I am leaving a message here because your e-mail address does not seem to be working. I am currently travelling through the country with my friend and we have made plans to climb Ol Doinyo Lengai in the next couple of weeks, though we are unsure how best to do so. Wwe are travelling on a budget and therefore ideally would like to do the hike with a local guide and without going through a safari company. Are you aware if there is any way of reaching Engaresero through public transport?

Any advice on the subject would be greatly appreciated, as is all the information contained on your fantastic website.

    Best Regards,

    Ross Turner

    • Ross,

There is not much in the way of public transport to Engare Sero village but there are occasional trucks that go out there via Engaruka. But if you do manage to reach Engare Sero you have the problem of reaching the base of Lengai for the climb, if you do not have your own car. It is 14km from the village to the beginning of the climb and while it can be walked it makes an already difficult climb much harder. It is especially bad if you come down from the summit and must walk back to Engare Sero in the heat of the day

  2. Dear sir,
I am going to travel through the country with a group of people interested in tanzanian Geology in July. We are preparing a guide about it.
We have almost all ready. One of the “stars” of the travel will be to to climb Ol Doinyo Lengai. I wish to know how long does the ascent take and what is the difficulty like.
I can find geological information in books and specialized papers but if you think you have something that could be interesting for us …any extra information will be appreciated.
    Thank you for the information,
    best regards
